About the Ken Caryl Ranch Community

Ken Caryl Ranch is a suburban village in Jefferson County, in the south western part of the Denver Metro. The population was 32,438 at the 2010 census; with a land area of about 10 square miles. Most of Ken Caryl Ranch is located in a beautiful valley just west of the ‘hog back’ at the edge of the foothills, the remainder spills out from the valleys entrance towards Denver. Ken Caryl has some of the same rock formations found at Red Rocks State Park to the north. These rocks date back 600 million years and were lifted into their odd angle 70 million years ago.

Background Information

Around the turn of the 20th century the valley was used as a dairy farm and in 1914 was sold to John Shaffer(no relation to me) the owner of The Rocky Mountain News. Shaffer added cattle ranching and gave the area its name, Ken Caryl after his sons Kent and Carrol. Lockheed Martin acquired the property in 1987 started planning for the housing community which was mostly built out by 1997.
